Caribnog 7

Caribnog 7 Last week (Monday to Friday) I attended the bi-annual Caribnog meeting. This meeting was the seventh meeting of Caribnog (Caribnog 7) and it was quite informative.

The major topic that was debated/presented at Caribnog 7 was the fact that we need to keep local Internet traffic local. Currently, Dominica has an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) set up so that internet traffic from someone in Dominica to another person in Dominica does not go all the way to Miami or elsewhere in the USA then come back to Dominica. This is excellent and hats off to Caribnog and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Committee (NTRC) for setting this up.

Also set up here is the Google Cache which means that YouTube, Picasa and other Google services will be accessed faster which I have no problems with. Let’s face it, Google is becoming the leader in Cloud services and they will only get larger and more popular.

Now, we need to set up some hosting servers here to allow us to have our own cloud and web hosting servers on island to make better use of the IXP. But there are hurdles in the road here due to high electricity costs among other things. But I think we can get it done. But there needs to be a lot of co-operation by the various stakeholders to see this become a reality. But personally, I have my doubts. I think the services will be too expensive and business owners and other individuals will do to US service providers like GoDaddy and HostGator among others.

But, the IXP is here, Google’s Cache is here, so why not create a local “cloud”. Personally I’m very interested in seeing this set up so that our Internet economy can grow.

Here are some pics that I took during Caribnog 7. Please note that I took these pics with my new cell phone that I can’t fully operate yet. Hahaha! What a disclaimer. Enjoy!
