2014 Windward Islands Tournament

The 2014 Windward Islands Tournament was held in Dominica on April 30, May 2 & 4, 2014. The teams participating were Dominica (the host country), Grenada (defending champs), St. Lucia and St. Vincent.

Day 1 saw St. Vincent vs Grenada and Dominica vs St. Lucia. St. Vincent drew 0 – 0 with Grenada. I expected Grenada to win since they were the defending champions but that was not the case. There were many chances created by both teams but none of them found the back of the net.

Game 2 on Day 1 saw Dominica vs St. Lucia and I was excited because I thought that Dominica was going to beat St. Lucia. But it did not turn out in my favour…or Dominica’s favour for that matter. St. Lucia won the match 2 nil despite being down to 10 men early in the second half.

On Day 2, St. Lucia played Grenada and Dominica played St. Vincent. St. Lucia won their match beating St. Vincent by a score of 1 – 0. If host country Dominica were to have any chance, they had to win their match. Dominica “hit the ground running” and so did St. Vincent in a very entertaining game but unfortunately, Dominica lost the match 3 – 2 and with that, all changes of winning the tournament.

Day 3 saw Dominica vs Grenada and St. Lucia vs St. Vincent. Game one, Dominica vs Grenada, was the third place battle. If either team won, third place was guaranteed. The match started off with Dominica attacking and successfully scoring 3 goals in the first half. Grenada scored one goal against the run of play but it seemed that this was the night for Dominica to win their first match. Sadly, this was not the case. In the second half, Grenada scored 4 goals against a fatigued and seemingly demoralized Dominica team to win the match 5 -3.

Game 2 was the championship match: a win for either team gives them the trophy but a draw gives St. Lucia the trophy. After witnessing an 8 goal first match, I was pumped for the second match but only to be disappointed by the two teams. St. Lucia knowing that a draw would be sufficient, played for the draw while St. Vincent tried hard to take the lead. But alas, the Chelsea style defence worked for St. Lucia and the game ended in a 0 – 0 stalemate.

St. Lucia won the tournament and I say congratulations to them. Dominica was disappointing and made matters worse by not attending the closing ceremony. It was a shameful display by the host country and it’s coaching staff and they should be penalized somehow.

Below are pics of the tournament, I have tried to organize them in chronological order, as best I can, from day 1 to day 3. Enjoy!
